COMMON CENTS VOLUNTEERS MAKE 20,000 PENNY HARVEST LEADER PINS!

April 26, 2007

On Saturday, April 21, 2007, over 80 volunteers from local schools, businesses and community-based organizations made nearly 20,000 Penny Harvest Leader Pins in preparation for the 07/08 Penny Harvest.  Volunteers sorted through a mass of pennies to find the shiniest ones and then glue pin backings to them. These special pins are used to recognize the program's student leaders and are distributed to participating Penny Harvest schools nationwide.   Joanna Geller, Community Development Fellow at Common Cents, noted that, "the event was a big success! Everyone worked together to produce more pins than we had hoped and had a great time doing it."

We are pleased and grateful that such a diverse group of supporters joined us.  Students from Penny Harvest schools including P.S. 334, Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, The School at Columbia and Urban Assembly Academy attended, as did a representative from The Child Abuse Prevention Program, a Penny Harvest grant recipient.  Volunteers from Con Edison, ABC, Barnard College and NYU's Stern School of Business also lent a helping hand.

In addition to the volunteers, the event was a success due in large part to The School at Columbia, a Penny Harvest school in upper Manhattan that provided the space to hold the event, as well as the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center who supplied movie passes for a special volunteer incentive.
