PENNY ROUND UP!

May 12, 2008

Penny Round Up!
Have you ever had to spend two hours looking for pennies?
Well, I have, and let me tell you, it was worth it.
It was for an event at my school called the Penny Harvest. No, it’s
not putting pennies in the ground and digging them up in the
fall. It’s collecting pennies to donate to services and organizations
such as the Red Cross.
Believe it or not, our school, Mary Lin Elementary, was the first
school in Georgia to collect pennies for the Penny Harvest. Can
anyone think of a way to get the Penny Harvest for more schools
in our awesome state of Georgia? Hopefully more schools will
see it’s for a good cause!
In the process of writing this essay, I had to email our penny
coach, Ms. Paula Kupersmith to get answers to some of my
questions. Do you want to know some facts?
• Did you know that 850 schools around the U.S.A. did the
Penny Harvest and that the total pennies gathered came to
one million dollars in all?
• Also, did you know our pennies did not have a bank until
the day of the Tally Rally? The guy who shook Mr. Mitchell’s
hand was sent to Mary Lin by Wachovia Bank. He’d just
heard of the Penny Harvest that day and was blown away
by our 76 bags of pennies. Because we collected so many
pennies, Wachovia is going to send us a money truck next
year!
