Home > Students at Brighton Elementary help animals in need
September 11, 2008
During the 07/08 school year, Brighton Elementary School students worked diligently to create change in their local community. In the beginning of the year the student body went door to door collecting pennies from friends and family members. In the winter they were awarded $1200 in grant money and convened a Philanthropy Roundtable to decide where to donate their funds. After weeks of identifying community needs and researching organizations the students decided some of their money should me given to Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Proving their compassion for animals, this was the second year in a row that PAWS received a grant from Brighton.
At the end of the school year, the students had a check ceremony to present their grants. The Development Officer for PAWS, Kelly Hyde, gladly received the $300 check. Cheryl Chow, the Seattle School Board President, was in attendance and acknowledged the students for making a difference in the community for people and animals. Brighton Elementary students will continue to be agents of change long into the future as they enter another year of philanthropic giving in 08/09.
