a story by Isabella, a student at PS 229 Dyker School in Brooklyn One day at Washington Middle School a girl named Nicole and her two friends, Alex and Sophie, were passing notes about their horrible homeroom teacher Ms. K. All of a sudden Ms. K announced that there was going to be a Penny Harvest and gave out bags. Nicole muttered to herself, “Sorry, but I keep what I like and I like money.”When Nicole got home, before she started her homework, she ran to the elevator and went to the 11th floor. You see every time Nicole turned another age her mom and dad would give her a new room on a different floor in their enormous mansion. She got her piggy bank down from her closet shelf. She went to her bed and opened her piggy bank. After awhile she finished counting all $45.11 in pennies. “I have to make sure mom pays me back for the quarter she took for the meter.” Nicole opened her book bag. She took out her binder, her books, and her folder. She opened her folder and took out all the notices including the Penny Harvest bag. She ran downstairs and gave her mom all the things that had to be signed. Then she went back up and without any care she threw out the Penny Harvest bag. When she started her Spanish home-work she heard a clink-clink-clink and then a squeak-squeak-squeak. She turned around and there on top of her bed was a giant army of pennies! She screamed, but of course her mom was downstairs making dinner and her dad was in the garden trying out the new lawnmower. She ran for the door, but the pennies were smart, 300 of them ran for the door and closed it. Of course Nicole didn’t dare step on them; she didn’t want to get them mad. She finally yelled, “Why is this happening to me? I don’t deserve this!” One of the pennies yelled, “Of course you do! I should know. I have watched you for the whole year and nothing changed about your greediness.” “Well I-I-I- ju-ju-just like mo-mo-mon-money,” she stuttered. “Well a girl like you should enjoy your money but you should also give it away for good causes, like kids who have cancer and homeless people,” the penny answered back. “I never thought of that,” she said. “I’m sorry I was so greedy. Now that I know what Penny Harvest means and what it is used for, I’ll try not to put myself first,” Nicole said. “But can I keep you? I like that you can talk,” she said again. “Sure." the penny answered. The very next day Nicole went into her homeroom and gave all 4,5 11 pennies in, plus the other 500 pennies she found lying around. Her penny friend was hiding in her pocket. Nicole was proud of herself and told herself, she, Nicole, would make a difference in the world when she grew up. Boy, did she do just that! She ran for president and won! She worked on the economy and helped people who needed homes and food. She made sure hospitals had better equipment. Most of all, she wrote out a check for 1,000,000 dollars and gave it to the Penny Harvest foundation and another 1,000,000 dollars to the Make-A-Wish foundation. She did all of that because her penny friend told her to make a difference. Isabella is a ten year old 5th grade student at PS 229 Dyker School in Brooklyn. |
